Text4baby: ensuring healthy pregnancies and improving the health of newborns and infants using modern means of communication

Mobile phones are widely used by women aged 18 to 24, and 94% of women who are the main target group of this project have a mobile phone. Mobile phones are widely available, simple, and easy to use; these are the key factors determining their use as direct channels of personal communication in this program.

Goal: ensuring healthy pregnancies, improving the health of newborns and infants
Objectives:
• To raise women’s awareness of their health, healthy lifestyles, healthy pregnancies, childcare, and medical services for women.
• To increase both parents’ sense of responsibility for their health, and preventive measures against perinatal disease and the development of pathologies in the first year of a child's life.
• To increase women's motivation to visit specialized medical facilities regularly.
• To train health workers with the goal of developing their communication and professional skills to improve the quality of services provided;
• To create a model of effective use of modern means of communication in health care.
Target audience: pregnant women and mothers with newborns.
Description:
1. Pregnant women and mothers with newborns get information about the free service through advertisements on products for pregnant women and children and from high-profile Internet and media campaigns.
2. Pregnant women and women with infants send a message from their mobile phone to a short telephone number to register in this program. The message consists of an estimated or actual date of birth. This message and all other messages are free for all mobile service providers.
3. After registering in the Text4baby program, mothers begin to receive messages with useful information, advice, and reminders about important aspects of pregnancy and infant development developed by leading Russian specialists in neonatology, obstetrics, gynecology, and pediatrics.
4. The mothers get several text messages a week throughout their pregnancy and during the first year of childcare. These messages help women make informed decisions about their own health and childcare according to their stage of pregnancy or the child’s age. They can also consult specialists at a clinic or through a hotline.
5. Women are able to choose the most convenient time of day to receive the text messages. The project excludes all types of direct advertising and product placement or any other kind of commercial/marketing messages promoting goods and services. It also prohibits recommendations of medical procedures, references to any pharmaceutical drugs and other healthcare products, and recommendations of commercial health providers and healthcare institutions.
The project also excludes all types of spam. Participants only receive messages from a database of officially developed and approved text messages. All text messages are reviewed by leading Russian experts in neonatology, obstetrics, gynecology, and pediatrics, and by specialized government agencies and state institutions.
Non-governmental organizations and federal structures will also take part in this work.
The Text4baby program does not require any additional equipment and/or payment
•The program uses the client’s SIM card, no additional SIM cards are required
•FREE registration and FREE text messages
• FREE calls to a hotline
• All text messages are developed by leading Russian experts in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, neonatology, and pediatrics with the help of non-governmental organizations, federal agencies, and are approved by special state ministries and departments
• Text messages are sent to clients only from the official database
• The program ensures the confidentiality of the client database and personal data
• The client determines when text messages will be received
• The client can cancel her registration and receipt of text messages, and discontinue participation in the program as a whole at any time.
