Caring for the health of mothers and children by mobile phone. SMSmame, an educational program for pregnant women and new mothers, has begun in Russia
20 February 2012
Even though Russia has moved from the 35th to the 12th position in Europe in terms of birth rate, and the country's infant and maternal mortality rates continue to gradually decrease, healthy pregnancies and deliveries remain a serious concern. A new support program for new and expectant mothers, SMSmame, has been introduced to address this issue.
The health of mothers and children is a matter of great importance for the Russian government. After all, in many ways the social and economic well-being of the country depends on the reproductive health of its population. Thanks to the implementation of a number of projects aimed at modernizing the health care system, Russia was able to decrease its maternal (by 47%) and infant (by 50%) mortality rates in the period from 1990 to 2009.

Russia celebrates Internet Day

The Internet has given us previously unheard-of freedom of communication, has become the basis for revolutionary technological breakthroughs, has made massive amounts of information available, and has dramatically expanded the ways in which millions of users can talk to each other, exchange opinions, and express themselves. This focus on the freedom, innovation, and relevance of each participant led to the Internet playing an active role in the public health sphere.
Internet and cell phone technology are what make possible the Text4baby informational project in support of pregnant women and new mothers with infants. Subscribers to the program, who can register on the website or by text message, receive text messages on their cell phone three times a week about how to protect the health of mother and child. The program is already quite popular in the U.S. The Health and Development Foundation is currently in active preparations for the program’s launch in Russia. One of the main priorities of the program is to organize effective communication with users of the Russian-language Internet.
